Grower & Coordinator: Maternity cover

Salary £23,000 pro rata (3 days a week)

Wednesday - Friday, 8 hours a day plus an hour’s lunch break

Term January - September 2022 with the possibility of extending beyond this period if circumstances allow. Reviewed in July 2022.

Probation period 6 weeks, notice period: 8 weeks

Wolves Lane Flower Company is a small-scale flower farm based in Wood Green, north London. We grow seasonal, scented flowers in step with the yearly cycle and with an environmentally friendly, organic approach. Established in 2017 we have worked hard to make a name for British flowers and inspire others to try the same. We have featured in British Vogue, The Telegraph gardening section, Bloom Magazine and The Evening Standard and won the prestigious Floret scholarship in 2018.

We’re looking for a fellow flower obsessive to join our team - initially as maternity cover but with the possibility of extending beyond this. The role will suit someone with at least 2 seasons of growing experience and expertise under their belt and ideally within floriculture. You’ll be energetic, ready to get stuck in alongside us with scheduling, horticulture, harvesting, spotting opportunities, jobs that need doing and taking initiative. There will be scope to get creative and get involved in floristry projects and we’ll train you to cut flowers at the optimum time to fulfill our weekly orders.

This is not a typical 9-5 role but will require some early mornings - sometimes starting as early as 6.30am when temperatures are high; and occasionally working on weekends. The role is three days a week so the ideal candidate will be able to offer a degree of flexibility to the Wednesday - Friday contracted hours but will always be rewarded time back in lieu.

With the right individual we hope to foster a close working relationship where you’ll become an integral part of the team and perhaps in time be able to take ownership of particular elements of the business based on your strengths and interests.

A clean driving license is essential, own transportation is preferred but not essential.

Please note this is not a floristry position and requires existing growing knowledge although no formal growing qualifications are required. Experience in coordinating people such as volunteer groups is required. The role can be physically demanding, and will at times require the individual to work independently, alone at our growing spaces.

Typical tasks could include:

  • Seed sowing and keeping accurate records of what has been sown or germinated.

  • Potting on seedlings and planting out on the plot, keeping track of appropriate planting distances

  • Keeping accurate records of what has been harvested

  • General garden maintenance including regular weeding and feeding on the plot

  • Preempting tasks or problems to help maximise yield of flowers

  • Identifying potential for more efficient systems, suggesting & implementing these systems

  • Coordinating volunteers with gardening tasks, ensuring they have understood instructions and answering any questions they may have

  • Cutting flowers for orders, organising mixed buckets for florists or DIY brides

  • Preparing flowers for drying and organising stock for winter sales

  • Meeting and liaising with florists picking up orders in the early morning

  • Some administrative support such as emailing joining instructions to participants of workshops

  • Taking photos for use on our social media

  • Assisting with floristry tasks including washing buckets, tidying the workshop and conditioning stems.

  • Potentially helping with floral design work

  • Supporting in workshop delivery with setting up space, coordinating refreshments

The right person will be willing to get stuck in with the less glamorous elements of growing flowers but will also have the enthusiasm, commitment and belief in our work to seek out and make other more ambitious ideas happen if they align with our plans.

To apply please write a cover letter detailing why you are a good fit for this role and a relevant CV of your experience in growing and flowers to hello@wolveslaneflowercompany.com

Deadline 5pm on 12 November. We will be contacting candidates on 18th to schedule interviews for the 22 or 23 November.
