Kent Wildlife Trust
Wilder Grazing Ranger
Location: Tyland Barn, Maidstone, ME17 3BD
Salary: up to £25,000
Hours: 37.5
Contract Type: Full time, Permanent
Closing Date: Sunday 10th March 2024
Interview Date: Tuesday 19th March 2024
We are unable to recruit anyone who does not have a right to work in the UK.
Globally and nationally wildlife is in steep decline. We appear to be reaching critical tipping points around the loss of biodiversity as well as around climate change, both being interlinked. Human society cannot prosper without wildlife and healthy ecosystems.
Kent’s wildlife needs to be restored to much higher levels. We can no longer allow common things to become rare. We can only do this by restoring large-scale natural habitat areas and processes. Doing this will contribute to solving global problems. But we won’t be able to do this unless we publicly aspire to a higher level of impact and show that we can deliver this.
Kent Wildlife Trust is the leading wildlife charity for Kent and Medway, supported by its members and staffed by committed professionals. Join our team and help us create a Wilder Kent! In return we will inspire you, listen to you, value you, treat you equally and fairly, look after your health and wellbeing and encourage flexibility from day one, enabling you to draw on these benefits to be a better, happier and more productive you.
The Job:
Kent Wildlife Trust is at the forefront of developing innovative ways of using graziers, browsers and rootlers to deliver missing ecosystem elements that were once provided by wild animals. Kent Wildlife Trust owns over 800 animals of 16 different species and breeds working across over 50 nature reserves and covering hundreds of hectares. The Wilder Grazing Rangers support the delivery of many of these projects, working closely with the Area Wardens, Livestock Managers, and Evidence officers.
This is a practical role that incorporates skills such as strimming and fence repair, alongside high quality animal welfare management and volunteer recruitment and support. Due to the nature of livestock work, some flexible hours will be needed, including weekend shifts.
You:
Are you passionate about livestock. Do you have a good level of skill in the routine husbandry of cattle, sheep, or pigs? Are you interested in regenerative agriculture, organic and mob grazing systems, grazing for environmental benefits? Curious about how traditional breeds and farming models are being adjusted to create new and improved biodiverse habitats. Do you believe in the power of harnessing the local community to build and develop the rural landscape for the benefit of all? If so, you could be just the person we are looking for.
