RSPB

We are looking for an individual with a proven track record in delivering peatland habitat restoration; someone with the experience, skills and drive to continue to shape and deliver an ambitious and high profile restoration programme, centred on the Lake Vyrnwy estate in Powys, Wales. This is an opportunity to work in one of Wales’s most iconic and important landscapes - restoring the condition of protected habitats and delivering multiple benefits for nature and people.

This programme of work is taking place on the estate in partnership with water company, Hafren Dyfrdwy, and in the surrounding uplands of the Berwyn National Nature Reserve.

You will lead the development and delivery of our peatland programme at Lake Vyrnwy managing a small team of staff and contractors to deliver restoration at scale.

You will lead the development of each project, identifying restoration needs, agreeing the restoration plan with stakeholders and funders, procuring specialist support and contractors and delivering a standard of work on the ground to budget and time and in line with RSPB's project delivery framework.

You will be recognised as a leading expert in peatland conservation work including standards of restoration and the Peatland Code. You will develop and maintain your technical knowledge, identify emerging issues and promote best practice to inform and underpin our delivery.

You will lead a small team of staff, managing and developing individuals to ensure we have the knowledge and skills to deliver excellence in peatland restoration at Lake Vyrnwy and extending this support to programmes and projects across Wales.

You will build excellent relationships with the wider team at Lake Vyrnwy and in RSPB Cymru, partners and neighbours in and around the estate, funders, policy makers and other stakeholders. This will directly lead to further restoration opportunities across the wider landscape.

Essential skills, knowledge and experience:

  • Technical expertise especially in peatland ecosystem function, peatland restoration techniques and the Peatland Code.
  • Track record of successful project delivery.
  • Experience of developing and leading a team to deliver excellent outcomes.
  • Effective partnership development and relationship management skills, internal and external.
  • Knowledge of natural history enabling identification of priority species and habitats in an upland context and an understanding of their ecological needs.
  • Knowledge of practical conservation delivery enabling you to understand, interpret and advise external experts on how to support our species and habitat conservation objectives for peatlands.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to be able to achieve key result areas outlined above.
  • Skilled IT user of packages relevant to the role.
  • Effective time-management and organisational skills.
  • Taxonomic, identification and practical field skills appropriate to the post.
  • Educated to degree level in a relevant subject.
